Make it last

Retainer care & best practices

Do

  • Wear it exactly as prescribed
  • Rinse with cool water after use
  • Brush gently with a soft brush and mild soap
  • Store it dry in its ventilated case
  • Keep it away from pets

Don’t

  • Use hot or boiling water
  • Wrap it in a napkin
  • Chew while wearing it
  • Use bleach or abrasive cleaners
  • Force a painful or badly fitting retainer

Bring your retainer to routine dental visits so we can check its fit and condition. Call promptly if it cracks, feels unusually tight, no longer seats completely, or irritates your gums.

Frequently asked questions

Can every retainer be made the next day?

Many clear retainers can be, but turnaround depends on your clinical needs, scan quality and appointment timing. Complex bites, significant tooth movement or another retainer type may require more time.

What if my teeth have already moved?

Do not force an old retainer. Mild tightness may reflect small changes, but pain or incomplete seating needs evaluation. If the movement is significant, a new retainer would simply preserve the shifted position. Ask the doctor whether short-term clear aligner treatment could close small spaces or relieve mild crowding. Some eligible cases may be completed in as little as four months; treatment time depends on your individual needs.

How long do clear retainers last?

There is no fixed lifespan. Grinding, chewing, heat exposure, cleaning habits and frequency of wear all matter. Replace it when it is cracked, distorted, loose, rough or no longer fits correctly.

How often should I wear my retainer?

Follow the schedule prescribed for you. Many patients transition from full-time use to nighttime wear. After that, wear it while you sleep—for as long as you want your teeth to stay where they are. Teeth can continue to shift throughout life.

Can I eat or drink with it in?

Remove a clear retainer for meals and for drinks other than cool water. Food, sugar and pigments can become trapped against the teeth and the appliance can crack during chewing.

Can I use toothpaste to clean it?

Many toothpastes are abrasive and can cloud clear plastic. Use cool water, a soft brush and mild liquid soap, or a retainer cleaner recommended by our office.

Can I use my retainer as a nightguard?

No. A thin clear retainer is not the same as a properly designed occlusal guard. If you grind or clench, ask us which appliance can protect both your teeth and orthodontic result.

Do you need my old dental models?

Usually not. We make a current digital scan. Bring your old retainer if available; it may help us evaluate fit, wear and prior tooth position.
